Trump OBM Director Defends Health Care Bill: ‘Insurance Is Not the End Goal Here’

In response to a question on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Office of Budget and Management director Mick Mulvaney said Wednesday that the purpose of the new Republican Obamacare replacement was not necessarily to make sure that Americans were insured.

“In looking at current law and what the House bill proposes, what’s your range of estimate of how many fewer people will have health insurance?” asked Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin.

“We are looking at it a different way, Mark,” Mulvaney responded. “Because insurance is not the end goal here, is it?”

“It’s one of the conservatives, one of the Republicans’ complaints about the Affordable Care Act from the very beginning. It was a great way to get insurance and a lousy way to actually be able to go to the doctor,” he continued.

“So we’re choosing instead to look at what we think is more important to ordinary people: can they afford to go to the doctor,” Mulvaney concluded. “And we’re absolutely convinced it would be possible for more people to get better care at the doctor under than this plan than under Obamacare.”
