The Coast Guard’s Lone Icebreaker Struggled To Complete Latest Mission

According to a report by Business Insider, the crew of the Polar Star, the US Coast Guard’s only operational heavy icebreaker, grappled with engine failure and flooding while completing a mission to cut a resupply channel through Antarctic ice in the Ross Sea. The Polar Star was charged with clearing a path through 15 miles of ice — some of it up to 10 feet thick as a part of the National Science Foundation’s US Antarctic Program.
