Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid cited his dad’s suicide in 1972 as an example of the need for background checks and a waiting period for gun purchases, saying, "Sometimes people, in a fit of passion, will purchase a handgun to do bad things with it…even as my dad did, killed himself…waiting a few days helps."
