Turkey continues to be the most secular Islamic society in the world. But after over half a century of modernization and Westernization from above, the past two decades have seen a gradual revival and reassertion of traditional Islamic values. It is most visibly reflected in the way Turkish women dress – in Western fashion or in various degrees of veiled appearance. But Islamization also manifests itself in Turkish politics – the growing dominance of the Islamic political party AKP under President Erdogan and its increasing authoritarianism and repression of free speech.
The two stewardesses perfectly capture the two Turkeys, an image that raises the question whether the two can live side by side or will increasingly come into conflict.
