1945: U.S. Uses World's First Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima


On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. President Harry S. Truman said the device had the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT and was more than 2,000 time more powerful than the largest bomb used to date.
